Yahoo Has a Profitable Quarter

Yahoo reported fourth-quarter net profit of $46.2 million, or 8 cents per share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $8.7 million, or 2 cents per share.

IBM Experiences Huge Drop in Earnings, Yet...

IBM reported net income $1.02 billion, or 59 cents a share, a 56 percent drop from earnings of $2.33 billion, or $1.33 a share, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue was $23.7 billion vs. $22.1 billion a year earlier.

Ebay Says What dot-com Bust?

Ebay announced it earned $87 million, or 28 cents per share, up from $25.9 million, or 9 cents per share, at the same time in the prior year.

Microsoft Declares a Dividend and Stock Split

Microsoft announced its first-ever dividend and a two-for-one stock split. Microsoft had $43.4 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of December, 2002. The dividend will add almost $100 million to co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates's fortune in the first year. Last quarter, MSFT had a net profit of $2.5 million.

Sun Microsystems Continues to Struggle

Sun Microsystems announced it lost 72 cents per share on sales of $2.9 billion for the three months ended 29 December 2002. That compares with a loss of $431 million, or 13 cents per share, on sales of $3.1 billion in the same period last year. Excluding one-time charges and other accounting stuff, the company would have earned $10 million, or break-even status on a per-share basis.

Amazon Earns a Penny a Share

Amazon posted its second-ever net profit during the fourth quarter -- $2.6 million, or 1 cent per share on net sales of $1.4 billion.
