Free Software was created in the mid-1980s by Richard M. Stallman (rms). The Free in Free Software has to do with Freedom and not necessarily cost; however, lots of Free software is free (as in in free beer). Free software is sometimes referred to as liberated software.
Open Source was created during the mid-1990s by Bruce Parens (and others). Perens wrote the Open Source Definition around 1997.
I use the acronym FLOSS to represent Free/Libre and Open Source Software. And a FLOSSer is a user and/or advocate of FLOSS.
