On Friday, 14 March 2003, SCC's CIS Department hosted a meeting with representatives from local companies who provided feedback on CIS curriculum.
The meeting in a nutshell: CIS is doing "okay" matching curriculum with real-world needs; however, numerous questions were raised.
- where is basic accounting literacy?
- where are communciation skills?
- where is technical writing skills?
- where is project management skills?
- where is an assembly course?
- where are math skills?
- where is Microsoft SQL server?
- where is computer security?
- why the emphasis on Oracle?
Miscellaneous Comments
I got a chance to briefly speak about the following.
- I introduced myself as the Free Software and Open Source evanglist at SCC. [This is a self-proclaimed title.]
- Described the Introductory Unix class (students learn to work at the command-line, they learn a text editor and they learn about the Unix Philosophy).
- Mentioned that we have a second Unix class going this semester in which students are doing shell scripts using Bash.
- Promoted the use of Free and Open Source software (specifically Linux and MySQL) for small-to-medium sized businesses.
- Indicated that students could take CSC120 to learn about digital design.
