A Google Moment

The seed for this GDT::Bit was sowed when I wrote GDT::Computing::Bit::Learning About Regular Expressions Using egrep and decided that grep was a GDT::Term (i.e. grep has become part of my everyday vocabulary; I have added grep to English).

I wondered what the Google search results would be for a query string of grep thurman. The number one hyperlink presented by Google was to the Lecture Note for Day 13 of the GDT::Introductory Unix course.

I wondered what the Google search results would be for a query string of gerald thurman. The number one hyperlink presented by Google was to a webpage from the SCC website at sc.maricopa.edu. The second hyperlink was to a picture of me stored on sc.maricopa.edu.

I wondered what the Google search results would be for a query string of thurman. The number one hyperlink was to Karen Thurman, a Floriduh politician. A hyperlink to ThurmUnit was number six on the list. The hyperlink was the first to a URL that did not contain the string thurman on its path. Observing these results prompted me to create a directory named thurman and created an http://deru.com/~gdt/thurman/index.html webpage that discusses my name.

I wondered if you could find Thurman using my alias name of Herb Mumford.

I wondered if there exists a query string that contains the word google that results in in a non-google dot-com hyperlink to come up number one. The query string google thurman resulted Google.com coming out first and GDT at number 10 (last entry on webpage one of the 3,780 search results) The query string google gerald thurman caused YRMusic.com to be number one, Google.com fell to six and GDT moved up to number eight.

If I were Google, then I would make sure that Google.com comes out on top whenever google is used in the query string.
