Biotech::Trekker Turns Nine
1 October 2011

On Saturday, 1 October 2011, the Arizona Republic's "The Issue: Arizona's Ability to Compete Economically" editorial was titled: "Bioscience can bolster state." The Republic's editorial started with the following:

"Arizona has a bright light in a gloomy job market: bioscience.
It's a broad field that includes health care, research, medical
education and a wide range of medical devices."

The Arizona Republic: "emerging changes in health care, such as informatics and systems engineering."

The Arizona Republic: "The Flinn Foundation was an early and critical proponent of bioscience in Arizona, financing a 2002 report that laid out a road map for the state and working to get leaders to implement it."

Arizona Republic: "From 2002 to 2009, bioscience employment in Arizona grew by 32 percent. [...] The average salary was $57,360."

Arizona Republic: "It provides a stable source of employment that is less vulnerable to ups and downs in the business cycle."

I posted the following to my AzFoo blog at AzCentral.com.

Numerous nanotechology and nanoscience companies have learned that the future is farther away than expected. More recently numerous alternative energy companies (especially those with an emphasis on solar) have learned that the future is farther away than expected. Now biotechnology and bioscience companies are learning that the future is farther away than expected.

I've posted multiple postings to this blog about Illumina--a San Diego-based genomics company. Yesterday (02011.10.06), after the markets closed, Illumina announced that the future is farther away than expected. Today (02011.10.07), when the markets opened, Illumina lost 35.5% of its market value.

"Clearly, we are highly disappointed with our revenue for
the third quarter. In the quarter, we saw what we believe
to be an unprecedented slowdown in purchasing due to
uncertainties in research funding and overall economic
conditions, as well as a temporary excess of sequencing
capacity in the market. We expect these conditions to
continue through at least the fourth quarter, while the
2012 - 2013 U.S. budgets for NIH and other related agencies
are determined," stated Jay Flatley, President & CEO.

I ain't know biotechnologist nor am I a bioscientist, but I'm 99.999% convinced that we're living in the Age of Genomics and Illumina--an American company!-- is one of the few companies in the world with "genome-scale technology for genotyping, gene expression and sequencing, the three cornerstones of modern genetic analysis." I am also 99.999% convinced that current herd of 18th century political dinosaurs are extremely talented when it comes to delaying the future.

The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University announced it had hired an "oncologist, immunologist, ecologist and geneticist."

Embryonic Stem Cells Created From Human Eggs
This made the front-page of the Arizona Republic on 6 October 2011.
"Researchers have created embryonic stem cells using
human eggs for the first time, a feat that may bring
scientists one step closer to treatments that can be
devised from a patient's own cells." -- Bloomberg

Today's Fiction Becoming Tomorrow's Reality?
Contagion is a film by Steven Soderbergh about a pandemic.
"Contagion makes the case that scientists and public health
professionals who put themselves on the line to fight infectious
diseases are heroes. I hope that, like Sputnik, it will inspire
young people to pursue these careers and help the rest of the
country understand the importance of these efforts. It is what
the world urgently needs." -- W. Ian Lipkin, professor of epidemiology
and a professor of neurology and pathology at Columbia University
    via NYTimes.com

One last quote from W. Ian Lipkin: "Those risks are very real -- and are increasing drastically."

Right now (02011.08.21) Wall Street thinks genomics is dead, but it's not. I continue to believe we are only a couple of years into the Age of Genomics.

Gregor Mendel -- The Father of Genetics
Gregor Mendel was born on 20 July 1822 and he died 61 years later on 6 January 1884. According to the Wikipedia, Mendel was the "founder of the new science of genetics for his study of the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants."

I (Gerald9588) posted the following comment on AzCentral.com.

I continue to believe that some great genomic discoveries are
going to be made as a result of Arizona's bioscience efforts.

What does the scientist/researcher say when you give him/her
a petaflops supercomputer? More flops, please.
